Equipment, Safety and Weather

Turangi Alpine Shuttles recommends that you bring the following clothing and equipment:

Food and water – take additional water if you plan to walk the summit tracks
Day pack
Sun protection
First Aid Kit
Hats and gloves
Strong shoes or boots
Wet weather clothing
Warm clothing
Mobile phone

Due to the rugged alpine environment of the Tongariro National Park, the weather at Mangatepopo Car Park (the beginning of the track) can differ greatly from conditions at the summits. Be prepared to change your plans and turn back especially when visibility is poor or strong winds prevail.

Please take care to note the essential clothing and equipment list above which tells you exactly what to take and what to wear.  During the winter additional gear like crampons and ice axes are required.

Walker safety is paramount to Turangi Alpine Shuttles which is why it is recommended that all walkers take an Alpine Shuttle service to the beginning of the track to ensure operators/drivers know when to expect them off the mountain.

Follow the Outdoor Safety Code:
1. Plan your trip
2. Tell someone
3. Be aware of the weather
4. Know your limits
5. Take sufficient supplies

For more information visit the DOC Website.

Be prepared for every type of weather. Please check the weather forecast before your trip and phone if you are uncertain of the weather conditions. Tongariro National Park has a specific MetService Forecast.

Turangi Alpine Shuttles will cancel the Alpine Shuttle service should there be adverse weather conditions – see Cancellation Policy.

Typical temperature range:  average 13°C with a maximum temperature of 25°C and a mid-winter minimum of -10°C
